Our 4 day Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop course provides an efficient and thorough introduction to Adobe Illustrator’s vector drawing and colouring tools and Photoshop’s digital painting process, as well as how to export those lines to laser engravers or other CAD programs.

By the end of this course, students will have an effective workflow to enable those already knowledgeable about jewellery design drawing and painting to use their skills to take their scanned jewellery drawings and turn them into perfectly hand-rendered jewellery images.

Unit 1 –

  • Introduction to Adobe Illustrator
  • Navigation and controls
  • Building Basic Shapes
  • Controlling shapes with selection and direct selection
  • Colours, Strokes and Fills
  • Stacked Objects and Groups
  • Pathfinder and Align tools
  • Using the Pen Tool


Unit 2 –

  • Using guides to build 2 and 3 way orthographic drawings
  • Controlling layers
  • Laying out professional quality design diagrams and specifications
  • Methods for converting pixel images into vectors
  • Using Pattern Brushes to build milligrain and chains
  • Controlling shading with Gradients
  • Controlling Type in Illustrator
  • Building a gemstone using precision placement of vector lines
  • Using gradient rendering techniques to colour metal and gemstones

Unit 3 –

  • Precision jewellery design techniques using Transform tools
  • Measurement tools and techniques in Illustrator, and tolerance considerations for jewellery
  • Exporting vector lines to laser engraving or 3D CAD
  • Adding texture to Illustrator drawings with clipping masks
  • Advanced vector shading with Gradient Meshes
  • Converting photos to vector lines with Live Trace
  • Importing Illustrator designs into Photoshop with Smart Objects


Unit 4 and Optional Tutorials –

  • Cleaning up scanned hand drawings in Photoshop
  • Importing and tracing hand drawings in Illustrator
  • Importing and size calibration of photos in Illustrator
  • Review of Photoshop selection, layers and masking techniques
