The BAJ Diploma Programme focuses on technical training, practical experimentation informed by the use of precious and non-precious materials, technologies and processes. Comprised of three elements, this course will cover technical skills, design development and business subjects, to prepare you for a flourishing career in the jewellery industry, or to set up your own business as a designer/maker.
Year 1 introduces you to complex technical skills, alongside expanding design and creative thinking skills. You will develop further essential workshop and Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills needed to complete and produce set and self-directed designs. Modules are delivered in a series of creative technical projects to provide an exciting jewellery education.
Over the three years you will build technical skills and attend relevant theory sessions covering gemmology, metallurgy, Computer Aided Design (CAD), collaborative and/or varied industry specialist projects alongside a range of competitions and exhibiting opportunities will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop and showcase your skills, talents and work to a wide audience and industry experts.
Our practice-based Diploma is taught at our Hatton Garden jewellery workshops, where you will have access to all the tools and equipment within our professional studios. Based in the heart of London’s Jewellery Quarter, Hatton Garden, you’ll be close to industry and culture, as well as excellent transport links.
A dedicated team of tutors with years of jewellery industry experience will be teaching and guiding you through the entire course – our personal and hands-on approach to training guarantees that each student receives unparalleled tutor contact time.
The course runs for 2 days a week over a 10-month period, allowing students to work alongside earning a qualification.
Topics covered to include:
- Intermediate piercing, filing, complex forming, soldering and fabrication of mechanical elements
- CAD (Computer Design) Skills
- 2D Design brief and design process
- Design critical thinking
- Gemstone studies
Who should take this course?: Individuals who have undergone the BAJ Foundation course, or those with previous experience of jewellery design and manufacturing wishing to progress and develop their skills.
Entry requirements: BAJ Foundation Diploma Jewellery Design and Manufacturing or proof of equivalent qualification. A bench test and portfolio review may be required.
Course dates: Courses will start on the 17th or 20th September 2018, with two days per week. (Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday)

Qualification: Successful completion of this course earns the student a British Academy of Jewellery Official Certificate of Completion and an (SQA) Level 4 Diploma in Jewellery Design and Manufacture.
