Carla Hughes is a Scottish artist who creates thoughtfully designed jewellery that brings joy and reflects the aspirations of everyday life. Her work seeks a balance between minimalism and functionality.Â
She has been working creatively for over a decade, but formally began her career path by pursuing a HNC in Contemporary Art practice, this led to her achieving a BA in Jewellery and Silversmithing from the Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Edinburgh.Â
Carla uses a diverse range of materials in her pieces and she works to include this diversity within helping and guiding her students. At the core of her practice, she looks to blend traditional jewellery and silversmithing practices and techniques with more contemporary digital technologies and innovative materials. Carla has applied and honed her jewellery and silversmithing in various professional roles in recent years, including working for an industry-leading highland-wear 3D print manufacturer and working for an independent glass-jewellery workshop in Seville, Spain. She works to share this professional, practical and theoretical knowledge with BAJ’s students.
