We are excited to announce that Dr. Sofie Boons, (BAJ’s BA (Hons) Jewellery Design and Production Course Lead), was featured on BBC Radio 4’s ‘You and Yours’ programme on 20th January, 2025.
In the segment, Sofie discussed her novel invention, rubies grown in-situ in platinum metal structures as an alternative to traditional mined gems. The outcomes challenge the notion of man-made gemstones as synthetic, since the process recreates how crystals grow in nature. To date the key benefit is the opportunity to use prevalent waste gemstone materials as seeds, making the process much more sustainable.
The discussion, which begins at 31:25 (listen here), explores the rise of lab-grown gems and highlights key topics such as affordability, sustainability, and the ethical benefits of these alternatives.
We are proud to see Sofie at the forefront of this crucial conversation around the future of lab-grown gemstones and sustainability.
As the Course Lead for our BA (Hons) degree, Sofie shapes the innovative programme with her knowledge and experience, guiding our students to challenge themselves creatively. With the UCAS deadline approaching, we still have a few places available for the September 2025 intake.
