Overview

This course is designed for students seeking a vocationally oriented higher education qualification available after two years full-time study. It will also appeal to mature students re-entering higher education. The vocational orientation of the programme is achieved via an applied and contextualised approach to learning. Entry requirements

You must be over 18 years of age.

Standard route

Level 3 qualification (60 credits or above, preferably Business, or equivalent)
English language assessment commensurate to IELTS 5.5. (PTE 51, Duolingo 85 and above, GCSE A*-C (4 or above), Functional Skills Level 2 or B2 CEFR – (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Non-standard route

Mature applicants 21+ without formal qualifications require 2 or more years of work experience, CV, employer reference, personal statement, English language assessment commensurate to IELTS 5.5. (PTE 51, Duolingo 85 and above, GCSE A*-C (4 or above), Functional Skills Level 2 or B2 CEFR).

There will also be a one-to-one interview session to understand students’ motivations to learn.

Per academic year: £6,000.

Funding through Student Finance England is available for those eligible.

What You Will Learn

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) consists of the Level 4 (Year 1) Higher National Certificate plus an additional 120 credits at Level 5 (Year 2). To complete this HND programme you will need to have achieved a minimum of 240 credits, of which 120 credits are at Level 5, and 120 credits are at Level 4.

Year one

Level 4

The aim of this Unit is to give students background knowledge and understanding of business, organisational structures, and functions, incorporating tools like SWOT analysis, alongside external and internal business dynamics. The knowledge, understanding and skill sets that students gain in this Unit will help examine the different types of organisations their size and scope (for instance micro, SME, transnational and global) and how they operate.

This Unit is designed to introduce students to the dynamic world of the marketing sector including elements of marketing mix and the wealth of exciting career opportunities available to support their decision-making in their career choices. Theories and frameworks of marketing which relate to real-world examples will be explored in this Unit. There will be opportunities to learn about the competencies and behaviours required by employers to work in the marketing sector.

Irrespective of whether an organisation is public, private or voluntary, its ability to attack, recruit and retain talented staff is necessary for the survival of an organisation. This Unit will give students the knowledge and skills associated with Human Resource (HR), roles. This will help students understand and apply principles of effective HRM, holding business outcomes and people outcomes in equal balance. This will ultimately help students to apply a range of people-management skills to enhance the performance of an organisation by finding solutions to people-related problems.

Students will learn about the theories of leadership and management. They will also be introduced to the soft skills required by leaders and managers which are frequently highlighted by employers as skills gaps in recruitment. This Unit supports the development of motivational strategies and considers the characteristics, behaviours and traits that support effective management and leadership and evaluate the importance of managing performance in achieving continuous improvement.

The Accounting Principles Unit is an invaluable asset for those aiming to excel in the business and finance sectors. It offers comprehensive financial and management accounting skill development, critical strategic decision-making capabilities and a solid ethical foundation. This Unit not only prepares students for diverse career paths and higher-level studies but also provides a platform for building a solid professional network. Through this Unit, students gain practical and theoretical skills that prepare them to contribute effectively to management teams and advocate for integrity and sustainability in the workplace.

The purpose of this Unit is to offer students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills required for managing and implementing a small-scale business project. Students would undertake independent research that meets appropriate business aims and objectives. This will consequently enable them to investigate and examine relevant business concepts in a work-related context and suggest appropriate solutions/outcomes for resolving the identified issues.

This Unit aims to give students cutting-edge knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of innovation and commercialisation as well as help them understand how organisations continually innovate both their product offerings and processes. Students will also acquire knowledge that will enable them to develop creative and innovative approaches that drive organisations to innovate while remaining commercially driven.

In this Unit, students will explore the impact of a range of digital technologies on the workplace, and how technologies can support businesses’ aims and services. These skills generated through an understanding of the practical and necessary use and application of relevant technologies will enable students to present themselves as being digitally literate to employers and give them the confidence to succeed in applying modern digital methods.

Year two

Level 5

Students will choose their own project based on a theme provided by Pearson (this will change annually). The aim of this Unit is to offer students the opportunity to engage in sustained research in a specific field of study. This enables students to demonstrate the capacity and ability to identify a research theme, develop a research aim and objectives, reflect and to present the outcomes of such research in both written and verbal formats.

The Organisational Behaviour Unit provides a comprehensive exploration of how individual and group behaviours influence overall organisational performance. This Unit equips students with essential theories and practical tools to predict and manage behaviours effectively within an organisation. The aim is to enhance students’ abilities to apply organisational behaviour principles to boost both team and individual effectiveness, supporting the attainment of business goals. Students will explore various dimensions such as the influence of culture, power, and politics, and their effects on organisational conduct.

Students will get the understanding of where new entrepreneurial ideas come from, the methods and frameworks which will help develop and assess new venture ideas, entrepreneurship and develop creativity while exploring the concepts of innovation. Student will get opportunities to learn how to define product or service benefits, identify target customers and understand industry and competitors from the perspective of a new entrant.

This Unit will give students a practical understanding of the key regulations and legislation related to the running of a small business or social enterprise. Students will learn about the activities involved in running a small business, developing customer relations, planning and allocating operational resources, forecasting and budgeting as well as interpreting financial statements.

The aim of this Unit is to introduce students to digital marketing and its importance in the successful marketing of organisations’ products and services. The Unit will enable students to develop an understanding of how organisations use various digital tools and techniques to engage their customers and maintain a competitive advantage. This will help students to stay ahead of their competitors and deliver cutting-edge digital marketing approaches and strategies.

The Unit gives students a practical understanding of what is required to successfully launch a new venture. It gives students an opportunity to plan and work through the stages of planning to launch a specific new venture idea.

Opportunities exist to learn about the need for resourcefulness which include the use of personal networks, to gain valuable source of knowledge, resources, advice and opportunities for launching the venture.

In this Unit, students will explore this new cultural ecosystem, where we use new practices of communication and social interaction through social media. This includes the use of Facebook, X, LinkedIn, blogs on countless themes, online stores, file-sharing platforms to develop strategic communication campaigns for their businesses which allows engagement across multiple channels with greater personalisation.

Timetabled learning and teaching

The course is fully timetabled, ensuring that whether students are on campus or online, a dedicated tutor is assigned to lead or support the class during the scheduled hours. For tasks requiring independent research, specific time slots are allocated for students to complete and submit their work within a set deadline. This structure emphasizes the importance of time management and responsibility throughout the course.

Guided independent study

The majority of your learning journey will focus on guided independent study. Here, you’ll have the freedom to explore course materials, conduct research, complete assignments, and develop entrepreneurial skills. Our faculty and support staff will provide guidance and feedback to support your progress.

Flexible schedule

Scheduled activities may occur on any day of the week between 09:00 and 18:00 allowing you to balance academic commitments with other responsibilities. Whether you’re a full-time student or managing work alongside your studies, our flexible schedule accommodates your lifestyle and preferences.

When not attending timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This typically will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking coursework assignments, and preparing and giving presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, the library and CANVAS, the online virtual learning platform.

Blended learning requires access to a laptop or desktop computer, which can cost from £100 to £3,000 depending on your course requirements. You also need to use word processing software such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Assessments are typically coursework which can take the form of presentations, essays, reports, portfolios etc.
