BAJ is proud to announce that Dr Sofie Boons, jewellery artist, researcher, and educator (SFHEA), has been appointed as a Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council (GC&DC) Champion.
Sofie has been chosen, along with a small, prestigious group of UK industry figures, to use her standing in the UK jewellery and metalwork industries to promote the Council, encourage regional activities and presence, and entries to the GC&DC Awards.
As a champion of craft, Sofie is a keen supporter of emerging talent in promoting the transformative power of making – reflected in her decade of involvement at the British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ).

“The Council and its Awards are a vital force in supporting excellence and encouraging new ideas. I aim to shine a light on these opportunities so that diverse voices and visions are inspired to participate.”
— Dr Sofie Boons
Joining Sofie as GC&DC Champions are Andy Howard, Gay Penfold, Rebecca Howarth, and Victoria Coleman, representing regions across the UK.
“Sofie’s appointment as a GC&DC Champion highlights the depth of talent and leadership within BAJ. We are proud that her expertise and vision continue to influence the wider jewellery and craft sector.”
