Sofie

Boons

BA (Hons) Jewellery Design & Production Lead

Biography

Sofie Boons is a self-proclaimed Alchemical Jeweller whose research and creative practice crosses the disciplinary boundaries of science, craft, and design. She recently completed a 4-year Crafts Council Research Fellowship at the Centre for Print Research and is finalising a Ph.D. investigating lab-grown crystals and crystal growth technologies, proposing innovations whilst challenging context, terminology, and underlying assumptions. In her research she is growing her own ruby crystals and aims to challenge the classifications and underpinning authenticity debates of materials and the role humans play in the creation of the so-called synthetic.

Sofie is a jewellery designer with a conceptual mindset. Her work is often not restricted to a certain material or technique and collaborations are a key driving force in her practice. After graduating from her second Masters at the Royal College of Art in 2013 she has continually exhibited her work domestically and internationally.

Prior to starting her research, Sofie worked as the Head of Academy for the British Academy of Jewellery, where she remains active supporting its BA and Higher Education provision. She also currently lectures at the Royal College of Art and the University of the West of England, where she is writing an Masters in Craft and Design.
