Hands-on jewellery-making short courses reopen in Birmingham

The British Academy of Jewellery is pleased to announce that it has opened admissions for three of its popular practical skills short courses at its Birmingham campus. Learners can now sign up for BAJ’s Stone Setting for Beginners, Wax Carving: Practice and Casting Theory, and Jewellery Manufacturing for Beginners programmes.

Aimed both at students enrolled in jewellery-related courses and professionals already working in the jewellery industry, the three-day Stone Setting for Beginners course offers learners a thorough introduction to stone setting techniques. Over the course of the program, students will learn to deal with a wide range of settings and styles, adding an invaluable skill to their jewellery making repertoire and opening their creative horizons to new and exciting possibilities.

The Wax Carving: Practice and Casting Theory course teaches students fundamental practical wax carving skills for jewellery making and provides an introduction to casting theory. During the five days of the course, students learn the whole carving process, from preparing different kinds of wax and carrying out a variety of carving techniques, to finishing wax for casting. To top things off, students complete the course with a piece that is suitable for casting.

Finally, BAJ’s Jewellery Manufacture for Beginners short course introduces students to basic jewellery making techniques. Ideal for learners with an interest in jewellery making who want to gain some practical experience before committing to a longer course, the programme gives learners the opportunity to make a silver pendant from start to finish over the course of three hands-on sessions.

Upon completion of any one of the short courses, learners receive a BAJ certificate and will be well placed to pursue further jewellery training through intermediate programmes at BAJ or to apply to our Jewellery Fundamentals diploma programme.
