Course description

On the first two days of the course, you will explore the effects that can be achieved by using tools such as the soldering torch, hammers, rolling mill and pendant motor. On the third day, you can choose to design and make a piece of jewellery or to continue experimenting with different techniques.

Entry requirements

No previous experience is required. Some knowledge of basic jewellery-making techniques, such as using a piercing saw and soldering, are an advantage but are not essential.

Fees & funding

No funding is available for short courses but as a student or alumni of the past 3 years, you may be entitled to a 10% discount. To find out if you are eligible, please enquire to speak with our recruitment team.

What you will learn

Over the course of three days, you will learn how to:

  • Carry out decorative techniques using the soldering torch and heat, including granulation and reticulation
  • Texture metal using hammers of different weights and shapes
  • Press texture into metal surfaces using the rolling mill
  • Texture with the pendant motor using burrs and abrasive wheels.

Your exploration of these processes will allow you to design and make one (or more) finished jewellery pieces that you can take home.

Students can consider progression onto one of BAJ’s other short courses in CAD or jewellery manufacturing and can find out more from our admissions team about applying for our jewellery diploma programme.
