Timeless Elegance: The Art of Pearl Hanging and Threading

In the realm of jewellery craftsmanship, few gems possess the enduring allure and timeless elegance of pearls. Since ancient times, pearls have captivated humanity with their lustrous beauty, symbolising purity, elegance, and sophistication. At the British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ), we’re delighted to unveil a course that celebrates the artistry and craftsmanship behind pearl jewellery – Introduction to Pearl Threading and Hanging.

A glimpse into pearl jewellery history

The history of pearl jewellery is as rich and fascinating as the gems themselves. From ancient civilisations to modern royalty, pearls have adorned the necks, ears, and wrists of discerning individuals across the globe. In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the ultimate status symbol, while in the courts of Europe, they became synonymous with royalty and luxury.

Elizabeth Taylor's La Peregrina, an early 16th century pearl, ruby and diamond necklace by Cartier, that was gift from Richard Burton and estimated at $2,000,000 - $3,000,000, is shown at Christie's, in New York, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011. One such legendary piece is the La Peregrina Pearl, a remarkable gem with a history dating back over 500 years. Gifted to Mary Tudor of England by her husband King Philip II of Spain, the La Peregrina Pearl has adorned the crowns of Spanish queens and graced the necks of Hollywood stars, most notably Elizabeth Taylor.

Another notable pearl jewellery piece is the exquisite 4-Strand Akoya Pearl and Diamond Choker, cherished by both Queen Elizabeth II and Catherine, the Princess of Wales. This timeless piece, adorned with lustrous Akoya pearls and radiant diamonds, embodies regal sophistication and grace. Originally commissioned for Queen Elizabeth II, the choker exudes a sense of tradition and majesty, serving as a beloved symbol of her enduring reign. More recently, when worn by Catherine, it seamlessly blends classic elegance with modern flair, epitomising her impeccable style and timeless charm. As a treasured heirloom passed down through generations, this iconic choker continues to captivate hearts and minds.

Modern interpretations of pearl jewellery

In today’s contemporary jewellery landscape, pearls continue to hold sway, inspiring designers to create innovative and eclectic pieces that blend tradition with modernity. From classic strands to avant-garde designs, pearl jewellery offers a myriad of possibilities for self-expression and personal style. Designers experiment with unconventional shapes, sizes, and settings, pushing the boundaries of traditional pearl jewellery to new heights of creativity.

In recent years, pearls have transcended the boundaries of traditional jewellery, finding their place as iconic embellishments in the world of high fashion and couture. From Kim Kardashian’s stunning pearl-encrusted Met Gala ensembles to the intricate pearl detailing adorning couture gowns on runways worldwide, pearls have become synonymous with opulence and glamour, showcasing their versatility as a beloved adornment not just in jewellery but also in the realm of fashion.

Symbolism of pearls

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, pearls carry profound symbolism that transcends cultures and traditions. Often associated with purity and innocence, pearls symbolise new beginnings and fresh starts. They’re also emblematic of wisdom acquired through experience, making them a meaningful gift for milestones and achievements. Moreover, pearls are believed to foster emotional balance and inner harmony, promoting feelings of calmness and tranquillity.

What are pearls?

Pearls are formed within the soft tissue of certain molluscs, primarily oysters and mussels. The process begins when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or a parasite, enters the mollusc’s shell and becomes lodged within its mantle, the soft tissue lining. In response to this intrusion, the mollusc secretes layers of nacre, a combination of calcium carbonate and protein, to coat the irritant, gradually forming a pearl.

Over time, as layer upon layer of nacre is deposited, the pearl takes shape, growing in size and developing its characteristic lustre and iridescence. This intricate process, known as pearl cultivation, can take several years to complete, resulting in pearls of varying shapes, sizes, and colours.

How to use pearls in jewellery

Pearls offer endless possibilities for incorporation into jewellery designs. From classic strands to contemporary creations, pearls can be seamlessly integrated into various types of jewellery, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings.

In necklaces, pearls can be showcased as a single focal point or strung together in luxurious strands, offering a touch of sophistication to any ensemble. Earrings adorned with pearls exude femininity and refinement, whether in delicate studs or dangling chandelier styles. Bracelets adorned with pearls add a touch of glamour to the wrist, whether worn alone or stacked with other bracelets for a chic layered look. In rings, pearls can serve as a stunning centrepiece or accentuate intricate settings, adding a dash of elegance to the wearer’s hand.

Whether used as a standalone gem or paired with diamonds, gemstones, or precious metals, pearls lend their timeless beauty and understated charm to jewellery designs, making them a firm favourite among jewellers and jewellery designers.
