The Right Tools for Your Tasks
During your time at BAJ, you will need to purchase hand tools for manufacturing. You do not need to purchase your toolkit before starting at BAJ but you should have the tools by the third week. Our tutors are industry experts and Jewellers; they are there to give advice and guidance on tooling and can provide you with information on your toolkit investment.

For your design classes you will use a sketchbook to research, develop your designs and record notes. It’s important you bring this to every design class. You will photograph it and upload these images to the design project portfolios you will make and submit for assessment on our virtual learning environment, also known as Canvas. You will also be expected to make a technical journal throughout your course (this is listed in the workshop essential toolkit).

Computer requirements for home working
Canvas, BAJ’s virtual learning environment, requires access to a computer/laptop to download and upload files.
While there is access to computers at the BAJ campuses, you will learn much faster and get further if you have a computer at home. If learners wish to pursue learning CAD to a professional level, they are advised (but not required) to purchase a computer with the following minimum specifications:

- 8 GB memory (RAM) or more is recommended
- NVIDIA or AMD graphics processor (most gaming graphics cards will do)
- 3-button mouse with scroll wheel

- Apple Mac that can be updated to macOS Mojave
- 8 GB memory (RAM) or more is recommended

Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Design & Manufacturing
You do not need to purchase your whole toolkit before starting your diploma at the British Academy of Jewellery, however, you are required to purchase some materials and tools before your start date.
Our tutors are industry experts and jewellers; they are there to give advice and guidance on tooling and can provide you with information on your toolkit investment. After your first day you will also gain access to student discounts at some retailers.
There are two ways to purchase your tools, you can either purchase tools individually using the lists provided below, or you can purchase full tool kits (details below).

Introduction to Canvas
During your time at The British Academy of Jewellery you will complete assessment work using your virtual learning environment, Canvas.
Canvas requires you to be able to access a computer/laptop capable of downloading and uploading files.
Canvas also requires you to have a gmail email account.
While there is access to computers at the BAJ campus, you will learn much faster and get further if you have a computer at home.
Introduction to CAD
As part of the Level 3 Diploma you will learn CAD, concentrating on the popular Jewellery CAD Programme Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino)
If learners wish to pursue CAD education to a professional level, they are advised (but not required) to purchase a computer with the following minimum specifications in order to run Rhinoceros 3D or other CAD programmes:

- 64-bit Intel or AMD processor (Not ARM)
- 5 GB disk space and at least 8GB RAM memory
- OpenGL 4.1 capable video card and 4GB Video card memory is recommended (most gaming graphic cards will do)

Mac minimum specs
- Apple Mac that can be updated to macOS Monterey
- 10GB disk space and 8 GB memory (RAM) or more is recommended
- 3-button mouse with scroll wheel
Rhino works best on PCs as it is more user friendly – gaming PC’s are ideal.
