Q & A
When did you start developing your signature design?
When I first started my business, my mother supported me by commissioning a ring. We had seen a watermelon tourmaline in a gallery, and the idea developed from there. As people responded positively to my ‘Watermelon Sugar’ design, I grew more confident in this direction.
How did it evolve, and how did studying at BAJ influence this development?
Studying the Level 3 and 4 Diplomas in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing helped me understand jewellery and material tolerances, and provided me with the tools I needed to support my creative instincts and push my designs further.
What advice would you offer someone interested in a jewellery career?

Jewellery is a rewarding field with many opportunities. It’s a reasonably lucrative industry, as the materials it’s made from hold an inherent value. There are also so many different paths to explore, from the production side of casting and mounting, to the more analytical and scientific side of gemmology or becoming a technician, and then, of course, there’s always sales too. Business skills combine well with design skills if you are hoping to start your own jewellery brand, as you have to cover a lot of these aspects yourself in the early days!

I personally enjoyed working for an employer early on, inside a variety of different companies, as it really helped to build my confidence in an environment where I could learn from others in all teams, whilst making a steady income.

It is a very saturated industry, so you would need to have a strong drive and determination. But if it is something you would like to do, I believe the jewellery industry can offer a very satisfying and fulfilling career path.
