Immerse yourself in the craft of hand engraving over three days. You’ll prepare metal and tools, practise decorative engraving techniques using stencils, and progress to creating your own unique designs. By the end of the course, you’ll have engraved a piece to take home and gained skills you can continue to develop.

Course Description

The course is suitable both for beginner and intermediate jewellers who wish to strengthen and expand their skill set, and have an interest in learning various techniques for basic hand engraving.

Entry requirements

No previous experience is required. Some knowledge of basic jewellery making techniques are an advantage, but are not essential.

What You Will Learn

During the course you will learn:

  • Set up your engraving tool and keep it sharp for precise, clean cuts.
  • Prepare metal for your image, ready for engraving.
  • Transfer images onto metal with confidence.
  • Make basic engraving cuts and see your designs come to life.
  • Build on basic cuts to create depth, texture, and detail.
  • Troubleshoot tools and common mistakes to refine your work.
  • Polish your engraved piece to a professional finish you can be proud of.
  • Produce six engraved copper panels to practise your skills.
  • Understand the health & safety considerations of working with sharp implements
  • Explore the historical context of decorative engraving on precious metals.
