Course description

Our Stone Setting Techniques: Beginner course, suitable for those with some preliminary knowledge of jewellery manufacturing, covers everything from tool-making to settings including tube settings, claw settings, flush settings and rubover settings. You will also learn how to set stones with a variety of different cuts, such as round cabochon, brilliant- and princess-cut stones. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a BAJ certificate and will be perfectly placed to continue your jewellery journey by undertaking intermediate stone-setting training.

Entry requirements

You should have beginner manufacturing skills.

Fees & funding


No funding is available for short courses but as a student or alumni of the past 3 years, you may be entitled to a 10% discount. To find out if you are eligible, please enquire to speak with our recruitment team.

What you will learn

During this course in setting, you will be introduced to a range of stone-setting techniques and skills. Building on previous jewellery-making skills, the course will include, but not be limited to:

  • Tube setting round cabochon stones
  • Claw setting round brilliant cut stones
  • Flush setting round brilliant cut stones
  • Rub over setting round brilliant cut stones


On completion, we strongly recommend enrolling on our course Stone Setting Techniques: Intermediate. Learners can also consider progression to BAJ’s Jewellery Fundamentals
