Syd

Kendall

BA Specialist Technician

Biography

As a newly minted Jeweller fresh out of graduation, Syd is carving her mark in the dynamic world of jewellery design with a keen focus on the intricate art of wax carving. With a passion for craftsmanship ignited during her studies, she embarked on a journey to blend tradition with innovation, creating pieces that captivate and inspire.

Whilst studying during the pandemic she has had to persevere and learn how to think creatively about her practice. When she was able to enter the workshop, Syd honed her skills in traditional techniques while embracing emerging technologies, recognising the importance of both in shaping the future of jewellery design. However, it was the art of wax carving that truly captured her imagination. The tactile nature of sculpting delicate forms from wax allowed her to translate her creative vision into tangible expressions of beauty. She has always loved sculpting and this technique allowed her to explore how you could make sculptures wearable.

Syd often uses other forms of art to express her interests and creativity, for example, she regularly practises painting as well as printmaking as a way to push and enhance her jewellery pieces and to relax. She’s always working with her hands and believes she can do anything she enjoys. Which often helps her in her role as a technician at the BAJ. She also thrives in helping with the students’ technical and design issues revolving around jewellery; she finds it boosts her own confidence when she can actively help someone’s work and design.

As Syd continues to carve her path in the jewellery industry, she remains steadfast in her dedication to craftsmanship, creativity, and storytelling. With each piece she creates, she seeks not only to adorn the body but to spark others’ creativity, evoke joy and curiosity, and inspire the imagination. In a world where mass production reigns supreme, she aims to stand as a beacon of authenticity, reminding us of the enduring power of artisanal craftsmanship and the timeless allure of handmade treasures and trinkets.
